Kishi CHIKUDO (1826-1897)

A large painting, 57 x 28 in; 144 x 71 cms ( image size ) showing a peregrine falcon dislodging snow from a heavily snow-laden pine tree. The bird was closely associated with the New Year. Chikudo was the fourth generation head of the Kishi school which was founded by Ganku. An artist with great talent, he participated in the decoration of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1854. Signed Kishi Chikudo. Very good condition. Original mount and wooden rollers. Ink, colour and gofun on silk. With box.

    Matsumura KEIBUN (1779-1843)

    A fine gajo, 10.75 x 6.75 in; 27 x 17 cms, folding out to 10.75 x 13.5 in; 27 x 34 cms. Consisting of 24 paintings in sumi and light colour of birds, animals and fish, starting with the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac: Rat; Ox; Tiger; Hare; Dragon; Snake; Horse; Goat; Ape; Cock; Dog; Boar. Keibun studied with his older brother Matsumura Goshun as well as Maruyama Okyo. Highly talented, especially in kachoga, and went on to consolidate the Shijo style. Original covers and title slip. End sheet signed by the original owner: Sichikudou, Naniwa (the place that was to become Osaka) with his seal. Another unidentified large seal inside front cover. Some slight wormage not affecting any image and some appropriate scuffing of covers; otherwise very good condition. Painted probably late 1830s.

      One volume complete Keijo Gaen, “An Album of Pictures by Kyoto Artists.” One of the finest of the Shijo anthologies. Published by Yoshida Shimbei, Bunka 9 ( 1812 ). The colophon dated Bunka 11 ( 1814 ). Twenty-six double-page illustrations by Goshun, Soken, Roshu, Hironari, Toyohiko, Shiba Kokan, Zaimei, Shoin, Toyo, Ozui, Keibun, Gito, Shodo, Hakuei, Gantei, Kokei, Nangaku, Gyokorin, Bummei, Kiho, Kosen, Minwa, Chikudo, Koshu, Geppo and Ozui ( in that order ). There are also copies known with twenty-five illustrations. Ex collection Hayashi ( small red seal ).

      Original blue covers with impressed pattern. Original brown title slip. Minor marks and wormage, but generally good condition.
