An original painting by Sadanobu II. A reclining beauty reading a book. There appears to be nothing else like this by Sadanobu, and indeed, there are very few bijin-ga prints by him. A beautiful painting.
Sumi and colour on silk. Image size 13 x 9.25 inches; 33 x 24 cms. Slight loss of gofun and minor marks. Mounted onto board.
Signed Ho Utamaro Sadanobu, “copied [ or imitating ] Utamaro, Sadanobu” with Sadanobu seal.

A chuban landscape from a set of at least 30 prints: Miyako meisho no uchi, “Famous Places in the Capital [Kyoto].” This design, Shijo-bashi yori Nawate-dori Yamato-bashi o nozumo, “View from Shijo Bridge Towards Yamato Bridge at Nawate Street.” A fine set, inspired by Hiroshige, but not slavish copies and some excellent designs (as the snow scene here). Published by Wataya Kihei-ban, 1858.
Fine, early impression. Fine colour and, apart from the usual imperceptible fold, fine condition. Signed Sadanobu ga.

The An artist who seems to have specialised in triptychs. Shows the actor Ichikawa Monnosuke I shielding his head with a large sedge hat (kasa). The middle sheet (naka) of a triptych with title: Hana shobu irotagai sannpukutsui, “A Triptych of Irises in Alternating Colours.”(Possibly following the colours irises come in: Blue, purple, white.) On the sleeves are the auspicious characters denoting long life. Published by Murataya Jirobe (Eiyudo), c mid 1720s.
Very good impression. Urushi beni-e with hand-applied colour: tan, blue and beni. Lacquered sumi over an embossed pattern and gold powder. Slight loss of the sumi, otherwise very good condition. Signed Tamura Sadanobu hitsu.

Ryoanji yuki akebono, “Ryoan Temple in Snow at Daybreak” from the series Miyako meisho no uchi, “A Set of Famous Views of the Capital [ Kyoto ].” A set of at least 30 chuban prints published by Osaka Wataya c. late 1850’s – early 1860’s. Shows visitors to the Zen temple. One of the best designs from the set.
Fine impression and colour. Very small repair top right corner, otherwise very good condition. Signed Sadanobu ga.

Through the masts of cargo vessels and heavy rain can be seen a guardhouse at the convergence of the Aji and Kizu Rivers from the set Naniwa hyakkei meisho shashin kagami, “A Mirror of 100 Famous Views of Osaka – truthfully Copied.” Around 63 chuban designs are known and this is one of the best. Published c. late 1850’s – early 1860’s by Wataki.
Fine impression and colour. Minor marks, otherwise very good condition. Signed Sadanobu sha.
