A large carp windsock (koinobori) fills the image floating above the Kanda River. One of the best designs from Meisho Edo hyakkei: Suidobashi Surugadai, “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Suido Bridge and Surugadai.” These streamers and images of Shoki are flown on Boys’ Day (Tango no Sekku) being the 5th day of the 5th month. The tradition was originally exclusive to samurai households who had a male heir but eventually spread to the rest of the population. The carp (koi) was chosen because of its ability to swim upstream representing courage and determination hopefully imbuing male sons with strength and good health. The design has always been admired but has become even more popular in recent years. Published by Sakanaya Eikichi (Uoei) between 1856-1859 (this being 1857).
